The Canary Island Gem – outbound #TravelNews #LaGomera

Travelling for holiday can be enjoyable or stressful depending on many factors from your personality to your planning skills. In the end once you have locked your doors and started on your journey you are in the hands of unfolding events of one kind or another.

Heading from #Scotland to The Canary Islands, the destination La Gomera to the South of #Tenerife.

To avoid the stress of incidents on the road, we overnight at The Holiday Inn Express Edinburgh Airport. Booked online and taking advantage of #IHG Loyalty card, a reasonable rate was secured for the room. To collect points you’re unable to bundle in a parking deal for more than one night. To secure the room and parking deal you have to forego the loyalty points. In this case the hotel staff gave a great deal for 14 nights parking and loyalty points were retained.

The hotel is busy, clean and reception staff are very efficient. The bar gets busy and slow at times as you book your meals at the bar rather than with waiting staff. Food arrives very quickly, well cooked, hot and tasty. The choice is not huge but covers most bases.

Rooms are ideal for  an overnight stay, beds are rather soft but comfortable. Free WiFi is available and the access code is provided on check in. Free WiFi comes with some security considerations, think about using a private VPN app for added security.

Breakfast is self service and a range of hot and cold choices are provided. There is a basic choice of fruits for the health conscious.

For £2.50 a return ticket for bus transfer to Edinburgh Airport can be purchased at reception. This service runs every 15 minutes.

The airport experience begins, a gauntlet for some, a chore, a necessity but all goes well through the various stages. Edinburgh Airport offer 2 hours free WiFi service if you register your details with Skyscanner. #Skyscanner were recently taken over by a Chinese company, so consider the security implications when you register and use this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-38088016 It provided a last minute connection for us to download a pdf pack of travel docs from #onedrive to the mobile phone.

The flight is a charter flight with Thomson Airways. Four hours duration to Tenerife South Airport. A near capacity Boeing 737-800 well served by crew and the usual basic offering of airline food and drinks are provided at usual inflated prices.

Arrived on time and waited 50 minutes for baggage, meaning a missed transfer to the ferry port at Los Cristianos. Coffee and another 50 minute wait and the transfer is ready. At the port of Los Cristianos there is a 2 hour window for free time and food. Discover the cafe Borbone and indulge in tuna salad, rose wine and an iced coffee. Fred Olsen Express Ferry

departs at 1900 sharp heading to the Island of La Gomera.

A slightly bumpy sail over then a further 50 minutes to the destination arriving at around 9pm

Part 2 will cover a two week stay on the Island and the selected resort.
