Angus Council are once again turning down valuable inward investment into the County by a major national retailer. This time it is Sainsbury in Montrose, being turned down because they apparently will not provide enough car parking space. The Dundee Courier carried this story today and indicate that Sainsbury have already amended their application once.
Do our local councillors never go shopping – when do they ever see the car parks at Tesco Forfar or Arbroath completely full, will the massive new car park at the new Asda Forfar ever be full? The Co-op car park at Academy Street stands mainly empty most of the time. Where is the sense in asking for such massive car parks from the retailers?
More to the point where is the common sense of our council in refusing such a valuable investment into the county at a time when the area is under severe economic pressure.
Angus Council do have a track record though – remember the fiasco of Asda Arbroath – literally years of wrangling with the council, again blocking valuable local investment in the county – for what reason ? we will probably never know, but if they carry on like this developers will quickly look elsewhere to invest their money.
